This is the plain version: a greeting, the notice with your last day, a line of thanks, an offer to help and a sign-off. To fill it in with your own names and the exact date, use the 2 week notice template and pick Email as the way you will send it. It also gives you three subject lines and a button that opens the email in your email app.
Not legal advice. Check your contract and local law for notice rules.
How to fill it in
Put your manager's name after the greeting. Use the name you would use in person.
Replace [Last day] with the date, written out with the weekday, for example Friday, October 30, 2026.
Add your name at the end. Your email signature can follow it as usual.
Check the subject line. It should say what the email is before anyone opens it.
Send it from the account your company expects, which is usually your work email.
Subject lines
Keep the subject short and plain. Your manager should know what the email is from the inbox list. Pick one that matches the tone of the email:
Warm
Some news: my two weeks' notice
My resignation, last day [Last day]
Two weeks' notice, with thanks
Neutral
Two weeks' notice of resignation
Resignation notice, last day [Last day]
My two weeks' notice
Formal
Formal notice of resignation
Resignation, effective [Last day]
Two weeks' notice of resignation
To, CC and attachments
Most of the awkward moments with a resignation email come from who sees it and when. A few rules keep it simple:
To: your direct manager, and nobody else at first.
CC: HR only if your company asks for that, or after your manager knows. A separate note to HR works too.
BCC: never. If it comes out later, it undoes the trust a calm email builds.
Attachments: a signed PDF letter only when HR asks for one. For most jobs the email is the written notice.
If HR does want a signed letter, write the email first, then turn the same answers into a Word or PDF letter. The two weeks notice letter examples show the printed version of each message.
When to send it
Send it right after you have told your manager, in person or on a call, so the email confirms news they have already heard. Send it during work hours and early in the week if you can, which gives the team the most time to plan. Avoid late evenings and Friday afternoons, when it can sit unread over a weekend.
If you work remotely, a short video call followed by the email is the usual order. For the whole sequence, from picking the date to your last day, see how to write a 2 week notice.
Examples
Eight emails you can send as they are. Each shows its subject line, and "Use this one" opens it in the writer with your own names and date.

Questions
What subject line should a two weeks notice email have?
Keep it short and plain, with your name and the word notice or resignation, so your manager knows what it is before opening it. Good examples are Two weeks' notice of resignation, Resignation notice with your last day, or your name followed by two weeks' notice. The list above has nine more in three tones.
Is it okay to resign by email?
Yes, when you work remotely or your company accepts written notice by email, which many do. If you can, tell your manager on a call or in person first, so the email confirms news they have already heard. The email then stands as your dated record of the notice and your last day.
Should I CC HR on my resignation email?
Send it to your manager first. Copy HR if your company asks you to, or send HR a separate note once your manager knows, so payroll and benefits are updated. Never BCC anyone, because if your manager finds out later it can damage the trust you are trying to leave with.
Should I attach a resignation letter to the email?
Only if HR asks for a signed letter. For most jobs the email itself is your written notice. If you do need a letter, the writer gives you both versions from the same answers: copy the email, then download the letter as Word or PDF, sign it and attach it.
When should I send a two weeks notice email?
Send it right after you tell your manager, during work hours and early in the week if you can. That gives the team the most time to plan the handover, and it puts your notice on record the same day you gave it. Avoid sending it late at night or just before a weekend.
Should I send my notice from my work email or my personal email?
Send it from your work email. That way it reaches your manager the usual way and lands in the company's records, which is where a resignation belongs. Keep your own copy of what you sent and the date you sent it, in whatever way your company's policy allows, so you can show when you gave notice.
