Prefer to fill in the blanks yourself? These three letters cover most jobs: a standard notice, a short one, and a formal one in block format with full addresses. Each comes as a Word file, a PDF and plain text. All twelve letters, including the email, the immediate letter and the nurse and teacher versions, are on the page of 2 week notice letter examples.

How to use the writer

  1. Pick your last day and three answers

Choose the last day you will actually work. The writer counts the days for you, says when the date is exactly two weeks away, and warns you about weekends and US federal holidays. Then pick why you are leaving, a tone, and whether you will email or print it.

  2. Read the letter, the email and the script

You get a finished letter, an email with three subject lines, a few lines to say to your manager in person, and a checklist for your last weeks. Add names and a thank-you line under "Add names and details", or leave the blanks and fill them in later.

  3. Copy, download or open it in your email app

Copy the text, download a Word file, print a PDF, or open the email in your email app with the subject and body already filled in. Press New wording for different sentences, or Edit text to change anything by hand.

What to put in a 2 week notice

A good notice is short and complete. It answers the questions your manager and HR will have, and nothing else. Include these parts, in this order:

  • The date you hand it over, at the top.
  • Who it is to: your direct manager, by name.
  • The sentence that you are resigning, said plainly.
  • Your exact last day, with the weekday and the year, so nobody has to count.
  • One line of thanks for something real.
  • An offer to help with the handover, sized to what you can actually do.
  • A sign-off and your name, with room to sign a printed copy.

Leave out complaints, salary details and long reasons. Your notice goes into your file, and a calm letter protects your references. If your last day lands on a weekend or a holiday, change it to the last day you will really work, since a date nobody can act on causes questions later. A full example

Here is a warm notice for someone leaving for a new job, with each part numbered. The words in brackets are the blanks you fill in.

[Date]

Dear [Manager's name],

Please take this letter as my two weeks' notice. I'm leaving my position as [Job title] at [Company], and my last day will be [Last day]. I've accepted a new role, and it's a step I'm excited to take.

I'm grateful for the chance to grow here, and for the people who made this a good place to work.

Before I go, I'm happy to help train whoever takes over and to leave good notes on my projects.

I wish you and the whole team the very best, and I hope our paths cross again.

Warm regards,

[Your name]

Mistakes to avoid

Most problems with a notice come from saying too much or too little. Swap the left column for the right one.

AvoidSay this instead
A vague last day, such as "in two weeks"The exact date, written out with the weekday, month, day and year
A complaint about the job or a person"I have decided to move on."
A promise you cannot keep, such as finishing every projectAn offer you can keep: notes on open work and help training a replacement
A long explanation of why you are leavingOne neutral line, or none at all
A missing date lineThe date at the top, so there is a record of when you gave notice
Resigning by text messageTelling your manager face to face or by phone, then putting it in writing

Letter, email or in person

You will usually use more than one. The best order is to tell your manager in person or on a call first, then send the letter or email the same day so the date is on record.

Questions

How do I write up a two week notice for work?

Say plainly that you are resigning, give the exact date of your last day, add one line of thanks and an offer to help with the handover, then sign it. Keep it to a few short paragraphs. The writer at the top of this page puts those parts together from four answers, so you can read it, adjust the wording and send it in a few minutes.

Is it unprofessional to quit without a 2 week notice?

It can be. Leaving without notice may cost you a good reference or the chance to be rehired, and it leaves your team short while they cover your work. There are good reasons to go sooner, such as your health, a family emergency or an unsafe workplace. If that is you, read our guide to resigning without notice and keep the letter calm and short.

How do I resign gracefully and professionally?

Tell your manager first, face to face or by phone, before anyone else hears the news. Then hand over a short written notice with your last day. Keep the tone positive and brief, work your remaining days fully, and leave clear notes so your work can carry on. A clean handover is what people remember after you go.

What should I avoid in a resignation letter?

Leave out complaints, blame and comments about other people, even if they are true. Skip salary details, long explanations and anything you would not want kept in your file for years. A resignation letter is a record of the facts: that you are leaving, when, and that you are thankful. Raise any problems separately with HR if you need to.

Is this 2 week notice template free to use?

Yes. The writer and every downloadable letter are free, with no sign-up and no limit on how many letters you make. Everything runs in your browser, so there is nothing to install. You can copy the text, download a Word, PDF or text file, or open the email version in your email app.

Does the writer keep what I type?

No. The letter is put together in your browser from sentences that are already on the page, and nothing you type is sent to us or stored anywhere. Closing or reloading the page clears your answers. We count page views and button clicks with analytics, but never your names, your dates or the letter itself.

Can I change the wording before I send it?

Yes. Press New wording to swap in different sentences for the same answers, as many times as you like, and Previous wording to go back. Press Edit text to make your own changes, from one word to a whole paragraph. Copy, download and the email button always use the text you see on the screen.

Can I open the template in Google Docs?

Yes. Download the Word file, upload it to Google Drive, then open it with Google Docs, and it keeps its layout, font and margins. The Google Docs button next to each template does the download and shows these steps. You can also copy the text from the page and paste it into a new document.
