2 Week Notice Template

2 Week Notice Letter: 12 Examples to Copy

A 2 week notice is a short letter or email telling your employer that you are leaving and naming your last day, usually two weeks after you hand it in. In most US jobs it is a custom, not a legal duty, but your contract, union agreement or company policy can require it, and it protects your references.

Want yours filled in with your own names and dates? The 2 week notice template writes it from four answers and works out the exact last day for you.

Do you have to give two weeks' notice?

Usually it is expected rather than required. In most US jobs, two weeks is a custom, not a legal duty. That can change when you have signed something: a contract, a union agreement or an offer letter can ask for a set notice period, and your company policy may say how much notice it expects.

So check three places before you pick a date: your contract or offer letter, any union agreement that covers you, and the employee handbook. If none of them mentions notice, two weeks is still the polite choice. It keeps your references warm, helps you stay eligible for rehire, and gives you two more weeks of pay while you hand over your work.

Two weeks: 10 working days or 14 days?

Most people count 14 calendar days from the day they tell their employer, so notice given on a Tuesday ends on the Tuesday two weeks later. Some policies count working days instead, which comes to 10 days for a Monday to Friday job. If your handbook says which one it means, follow it.

Either way, write the actual date in the letter, with the weekday and the year. A date leaves nothing to count. The writer shows the date that is exactly two weeks away, and it warns you when your last day falls on a weekend or a US federal holiday, so you can move it to the last day you will really work.

If your employer ends your job the day you give notice

Some employers accept a resignation and ask you to leave the same day. Plan for it so it does not catch you out:

  • Save your personal files and contacts from work devices before you hand the letter over.
  • Know when your final paycheck is due. Rules differ by state, so check your state labor department.
  • Have your badge, keys and laptop ready to return, and ask for a receipt.
  • Ask for a reference in writing while the goodwill is fresh.

If you need to leave without notice yourself, the immediate resignation letter page covers how to word it and what to check first.

How to pick one

Start from your situation, then adjust the tone. Every letter loads into the writer with your own names and dates.

Questions

Can my employer make my last day earlier than my notice says?

Yes, in many cases. Some employers accept a resignation and end the job right away instead of keeping you for the notice period, so plan for it before you hand the letter over. Save your personal files, know when your final pay is due (check your state labor department), and be ready to return company property that day.

Should I give my notice in person or in writing?

Both. Tell your manager first, in person or on a call, so the news comes from you. Then give the letter or send the email the same day, so there is a dated record of your notice and your last day. If you work remotely, a video call followed by the email works well.

Can I take back a 2 week notice after I give it?

Only if your employer agrees. Once you have resigned, they can accept it and start planning around it. If you change your mind, ask quickly, in person and then in writing, and keep the explanation brief. Be ready for a no, because they may already have started to replace you.

What if my last day falls on a weekend or a holiday?

Pick the last day you will actually work. If two weeks from today lands on a Saturday or Sunday and you work weekdays, the Friday before is the usual choice. The writer flags weekends and US federal holidays as soon as you pick a date, and it can switch to the suggested day for you.

Is a 2 week notice the same as a resignation letter?

Yes. A 2 week notice is a resignation letter that gives about two weeks between the day you hand it in and your last day. If you are giving more time, or less, the wording changes a little, and our resignation letter examples cover those cases, from a month of notice to leaving the same day.

Can I give more than two weeks' notice in my letter?

Yes. People in senior, teaching and nursing roles often give more than two weeks, and some contracts ask for it. When you do, name your exact last day instead of calling it two weeks' notice, so nobody has to work out the date. The writer words the letter correctly for any last day up to a year away.
