When resigning without notice is reasonable
Two weeks is the custom, but it is not always possible or safe. Leaving at once is a fair choice when staying would harm you:
Your health needs your full attention now.
A family emergency needs you at home.
The workplace is unsafe.
You are being harassed.
Your wages have not been paid.
A new job starts right away and cannot wait.
It is riskier when you have signed terms that tie you to notice: a contract with a notice period, or a sign-on bonus or training cost you agreed to repay if you leave early. Read those before you decide. If you can give notice after all, even a few days, how to write a 2 week notice shows the usual path.
What you may give up
Leaving the same day is allowed in many jobs, but it can cost you things that a notice period would have protected:
A reference. A manager left short may be less willing to vouch for you.
Rehire eligibility. Some employers mark people who leave without notice as not eligible to return.
A payout of unused paid time off, where a company policy ties it to giving notice. Check your handbook and your state labor department before you count on it.
Goodwill with the team who will cover your work.
None of this means you should stay somewhere that is hurting you. It means writing the letter carefully, and doing the few things that keep the door open where you can.
How to word it without blame
The letter is a record of facts, not the place to explain or argue. Keep it to four things: that you are resigning, your last day (today, or a date in the next few days), a line of thanks, and one honest offer of help, such as answering questions by email.
If you are leaving because of harassment, an unsafe workplace or unpaid wages, report that separately, in writing, to HR or to the agency that handles it, and keep a copy. A neutral letter protects you; an angry one can be used against you later. If you are sending it by email, the two weeks notice email page has subject lines that work for an immediate resignation too.

Before you walk out the door
Do these before you leave, because access often ends the moment you resign:
Save your personal files, photos and contacts from work devices. Leave company files where they are.
Return your badge, keys, laptop and phone, and ask for a receipt. If you cannot return them in person, agree on shipping and keep the tracking number.
Ask HR, in writing, when your final paycheck will arrive, when your benefits end and what options you have to keep health coverage.
Give HR a personal email address for your final pay stub and tax forms.
If you can give a short notice instead of none, the 2 week notice template words it for any date, from tomorrow to a month away, and flags weekends and holidays.
Questions
Can I resign effective immediately?
In most US jobs you can leave at any time, but your contract, a union agreement or a repayment clause may set conditions, so read yours first. If you can, tell your manager before you go, and put your last day in writing the same day. Check with your state labor department if you are unsure.
What are good reasons to quit without notice?
Common reasons include your health, a family emergency, unsafe working conditions, harassment and wages that have not been paid. You do not need to explain any of them in the letter. A short, neutral letter protects you either way, and safety or harassment problems are best reported separately, in writing.
Will I still get my final paycheck if I quit without notice?
In general you are owed pay for the hours you worked, whether or not you give notice. When it must arrive depends on your state, so check your state labor department, and ask HR in writing for the date and how it will be paid. Give them a personal email address for the final pay stub.
What happens to unused PTO when I resign immediately?
It depends on your state and your company's policy. Some employers pay out unused paid time off when you leave and some do not, and a few policies tie the payout to giving notice. Check your handbook and your state labor department, and ask HR in writing before your last day.
Should I say why I am leaving immediately?
One neutral line is enough, or none at all. Never put blame in writing, even when it is deserved, because the letter stays in your file. If you are leaving over safety or harassment, report it separately to HR or the right agency, in its own message, and keep a copy.
How do I return company property if I leave the same day?
Hand it over before you leave, or agree on shipping with your manager or HR the same day. Ask for a receipt, or keep the tracking number if you ship it. Make a short list of what you returned, such as your badge, keys and laptop, so there is no question later.
